on reading simone de beauvoir's les belles images

things are not beautiful or things or not all beautiful. life is not
beautiful or at least not always beautiful and maybe not beautiful
at all. and to live life one must not try to make life beautiful. to
really live life one must not attempt the unpretty pretty. to
have an upsetting reaction to the discovery of life's unprettiness
is normal and to attempt to repress this reaction is to maim. is to
make abnormal. to be normal, to be natural, is to be upset at the
uncovering of life's ugliness. to be abnormal is to force a view of
beautiful life. beautiful images. false pretenses. to cover and
pretend. to assuage. to mollify. these are to maim. to turn an eye,
to seek and accept beauty as the only, is to deaden the heart.

description: To publicize the October 27, 2007 Anti-
War protest, we created black and white posters
featuring George W. Bush, Harry Reid and Nancy
Pelosi, or Hillary Clinton. At our monthly Street Salon
event we asked passers-by to deface the images. We
scanned the images and then posted them in the Bay
Area. The zine is a compilation of all of the defaced
posters, in full color. There are also black and white
images of the posters after we posted them and a
short description of the project.

dresses by softspoken

new line of work

been away for much too long
but in the meantime have
made seven dresses (only 5
for the shop - two as practice
which will be for me). also
found a book of crochet
stitches and have been learning
those to incorporate into new
designs and patterns. for
now, though, there will probably
be a few scarves to help me get them
under my fingers.
